Module 4 · Publishing Setup Without the Confusion

Imprints, author names and the publishing account

What you'll understand: Understand the identity and account decisions behind a published book.

Your imprint

An imprint is the publisher or trade name associated with the publication. It can appear on the book and in publishing metadata and copyright information. If you buy your own ISBN you can record an imprint name of your choosing, subject to practical and legal considerations — names can already be in use or protected, so it's worth checking. An imprint isn't automatically a company.

Your author name

Decide exactly how your name appears, including middle initials, and use it consistently everywhere: cover, title page, metadata, author profile. Inconsistent spellings can make it harder for readers and retail sites to associate your books with one author. A pen name is completely legitimate; just choose it before publication rather than after.

The publishing account

Your book is published through an account on a platform such as Amazon KDP. That account holds your identity, your tax information and your bank details, and it's where royalties are paid.

Why this matters

These are practical control decisions dressed up as admin. Copyright in your work is separate and isn't created by an ISBN, an imprint or a KDP account — but the account determines who has direct access to the listing, the reports and the payments.

What to do with this information

Write down your exact author name as it will appear, and note whether you want an imprint name.
