First-time authors

You don't need to know the publishing industry to publish well.

You need to understand your options, in order, in plain language. That is what this page is for — no jargon, no pressure, and no assumption that you should already know this.

Where are you now?

Pick the sentence that sounds most like you.

You're closer than you think.

The hardest part is done. What's left is production: making sure the manuscript is polished where needed, designing a cover, formatting the interior, and completing publishing setup in your own Amazon KDP account.

What to keep in mind

  • You keep your rights and your royalties — the book stays yours.
  • The production sequence depends on the plan you agree to.
  • Publishing setup comes near the end, and the details are worth getting right.

The words people use

A short vocabulary, once and for all.

These are the terms that come up in almost every first publishing consultation.

Trim size
The physical dimensions of your printed book. It affects page count, layout and price.
ISBN
An identifier for a specific edition or format of a book. A print edition can use an ISBN you own or, if eligible, a free ISBN from Amazon KDP. eBooks published through KDP do not require an ISBN.
Metadata
Title, description, categories and keywords — the data that helps retail platforms understand and surface your book.
Reflowable EPUB
The standard eBook format, where text adapts to the reader's device and font size.
Front and back matter
Title page, copyright page, dedication, acknowledgements and author bio pages.
Proof copy
A physical or digital sample used to confirm everything is correct before release.

Clearing the air

Four things authors are often told that aren't true.

Often heard

Self-publishing means doing everything alone.

It means you own the book and the decisions. You can bring in professional help for the production work you choose.

Often heard

A good manuscript doesn't need editing.

Professional publication commonly includes some level of editing or proofreading, and the right level depends on the manuscript — it is not a verdict on your writing.

Often heard

The cover matters less for eBooks.

Cover design still matters greatly for eBooks, because readers often see your cover first as a small thumbnail beside dozens of others.

Often heard

You publish once and you're done.

Metadata, categories, description and pricing can be adjusted after publication. Your listing can keep being managed over time.
