The publishing process, in order

Publishing has an order. It isn't a rule someone made up — each stage produces something the next stage needs.

1. 1Manuscript settled. The text is final enough that big changes aren't expected.
2. 2Editing. The level depends on the manuscript; this is where the words get their last real work.
3. 3Interior formatting. Your edited text is laid out at a chosen trim size, producing a final page count.
4. 4Cover design. Concept and design exploration can begin earlier, but the final print wrap and spine dimensions need the final page count, so they follow formatting.
5. 5Publishing setup. ISBN, imprint, title and subtitle, description, categories, keywords, pricing.
6. 6Proof and review. You see the book as a reader would, on screen and usually in print.
7. 7Publication. Files are submitted, the platform reviews them, and the listing goes live.

Formatting depends on editing

Every edit after layout means re-flowing pages. Small fixes are fine; a rewritten chapter is not.

Final cover dimensions depend on formatting

Final print wrap and spine width are calculated from page count and paper stock. Change the page count and the wrap has to be rebuilt. Concept work can start sooner.

Publication depends on proofing

Once a book is live, corrections are possible but visible. It's cheaper to catch things in the proof.
